Hey team!

Hope you had a great weekend! As we talked about on Friday, please have the Tryout Dance and Camp dance prepared for Monday. Please do amazing work for Coach Killion and Coach Sumner. Can't wait to see all you'll accomplish! I'll miss you, and I'll see you Wednesday!

Camp Dance (unfortunately we weren't able to catch the whole dance at camp. But here's the ending. Sorry about that!)

Beginning of the Season!

Wow! This summer has just flown by! Our new season is right around the corner.

Remember that our OCCA Camp is this Saturday! You can click here if you need more information about that!

The time for Free Sports Physicals was reported incorrectly. The correct time is 5:00 - 7:00 PM. The date and location are the same. Thursday August 10th at the United Methodist church. Please wear athletic clothing, including a sports bra. Slip on shoes are usually easiest to wear.

  • To Do List - please do these before practice on Monday August 14th!
    • Register as an athlete at Madras Athletics. Do NOT pay the fee. Cheerleading does not currently pay this fee.
    • Bring your signed copy of the expectations contract to practice.
    • Get your physical! If you aren't sure if you need one contact Coach Heying ASAP. Don't assume!
    • Review and KNOW all material before the first practice. Check out the Materials page here. Don't forget to review the material we learned at tryouts! You can find that on the team Facebook page. All material is REQUIRED. You are responsible for knowing all material before our first practice! The only video you do not need to learn is the "Basketball Chants" video.
    • Start stretching, jumping, and working out. If you haven't been doing this all summer you are going to be sore! Start now so you will feel better after our first practices.

  • Fundraising Opportunity
    • I was approached today with a fundraising opportunity during the eclipse. There will be a large group of tourists camping around MHS. The locker rooms inside the PAC will be used for the campers to shower. Our fundraising opportunity would be to sit outside the locker rooms (in the air conditioning!) and collect money from the campers who want to shower and pointing them to the correct locker room. While we will work out concrete times if we accept this opportunity, the predicted times are Sunday August 20th 6-10 AM and 6-8 PM, and Monday August 21st 6-9 AM. I know that this is a busy time for many families. However, this is an easy opportunity for us to earn money for the team that doesn't require much time. Plus, we don't need the entire time to run it! We will only need 2-3 cheerleaders per shift. Please let Coach Heying know ASAP if you are interested in this opportunity. This fundraiser could help fund our travel to an away game (Gladstone) this season!

I am so excited for this upcoming season! As you may have seen on the Facebook page, our new gear has started to arrive. It is gorgeous! Thanks!

OCCA Cheer Camp

 Hello everyone!

The Oregon Cheerleading Coaches Association puts on one-day camps for teams all over Oregon. Ours is this weekend! This is a camp that is free to all OCCA members, and we are members! This is a fantastic opportunity for us to learn new material and skills, as well as meet other teams in Central Oregon. Here is some important info to know about the upcoming camp:

  • Camp will be on Saturday August 12th. The camp will run from 12-4 PM at Mountain View High School.
  • We will meet at MHS at 9:45. Returners need to wear their blue tanks. Team members will change into their newly arrived gear. Make sure you wear your cheer shoes and a sports bra. Wear other athletic gear as a back-up.
  • Wear your hair in a high ponytail so we can wear our new bows!
  • We will leave MHS at 10:30 sharp, and will caravan to Mountain View High School. Coach Heying will drive one vehicle, and 2 seniors will be driving the other vehicles.
  • Pack a lunch! There will be no time to go out for food. Please make healthy choices so your body can continue to work hard after lunch.
  • Bring a water bottle!
  • Bring a positive attitude and a strong work ethic!
  • We will return to MHS between 5:15 and 5:30. Please have your ride ready to meet you there!
Team members who are unable to attend this camp will need to meet with other teammates and learn the materials.

Please let me know if you have any questions. Can't wait to see our skills grow even more!

Team Camp 2017

Hello everyone!

Thank you so much to all of our families and cheerleaders who helped with our car wash! We had a fantastic turn out and were slammed for the entire 4 hours!

As you know, our team camp start this week! We have such an amazing opportunity to have a coach from another school come to our town and work with us.

Camp dates are Friday July 14th and Saturday July 15th. Friday we will have camp from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm. Saturday camp will be from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. Please DO NOT be late.

Camp will be in the Madras Performing Arts Center (the PAC.) Because our gym is closed for waxing, we are fortunate to get to use the PAC. One of the conditions of us using the PAC is that there is ABSOLUTELY NO FOOD OR DRINK on the stage. We are allowed to bring water bottles on the stage. However, they must be TIGHTLY sealed. Please do not bring water bottles that have straws sticking out of them (ones that look like iced coffee cups.)

Lunch will be from 12-1 pm each day. Cheerleaders can either bring lunch, or go out to get lunch. ALL cheerleaders are expected to be back on time from lunch so we can promptly start at 1:00pm. Please make sure you make smart food choices to help you feel good during our long days!

Please wear a sports bra, cheer shoes, athletic shorts or capris, and a school colored shirt. If you have gear from a previous season, or can borrow some, we'd love to see that. Bows are always welcome!

We will be doing uniform fittings after camp each day. Each cheerleader will need to stay after one day of camp to try on uniform sizes. Please remember that cheer fees and order forms are due on Saturday July 15th!

Please let me know if you have any other questions about our camp. Can't wait to see you all there!

Car Wash Info

Hello team and families!

Hope your summer is off to a wonderful start! It sure is flying by! Here is some information for this weekend's car wash. Look for another post next week with information about our upcoming team camp! Please remember to pay your cheer fees ASAP. Fees and order forms are due by July 15th.

The car wash will be from 10 am to 2 pm in the Napa parking lot.

  • Meet in the Napa parking lot at 9:45 am.
  • Let Coach Heying know if you can bring any of the following supplies: buckets, hoses, hose nozzles, towels, drying racks, squeegees, car sponges, a canopy, etc. The more supplies we have the easier it is to work! Make sure you have your name on any items you bring for easy cleanup after.
  • Please dress appropriately. Returners please wear a cheer shirt, (either the blue tank, blue tee, or tie-dye shirt.) Rookies please borrow an extra shirt from a returner, or wear something red or blue. Wear black bottoms of some sort (NOT the team shorts from last year) or jeans. Wear shoes that will keep you comfortable, but you don't mind getting wet! Bows are encouraged, but not required.
  • Bring a water bottle. DO NOT forget this! It is very important that you stay hydrated.
  • Bring healthy snacks. If you want lunch please bring some with you!
  • Bring and/or wear sunscreen.
  • Any funds raised will be split evenly between team members who help at the car wash. If you are only able to help for part of the time, then you will receive funds for how long you help.
  • Coach Heying will deduct how much you earned from your order form, and will update you ASAP. That money will be put in the cheer account so it can be used to order your gear. That means the sooner you turn in your order form, the sooner you'll know your new balance.
  • You can help advertise by telling your family and friends, and by sharing the announcement from the team Facebook page! If everyone can tell 10 people and/or share on Facebook we will get in touch with lots of people!
If there is any information you feel is missing please contact Coach Heying!

                 Thanks!

Summer 2016

Hello everyone!

Hope you are having an amazing summer so far! Here is some important information, and reminders for the upcoming season.

  1. Practice starts Monday August 15th. Summer practices will run from 4:00 - 7:00PM Monday through Friday.
  2. FREE sports physicals will be available August 11th from 5:00 - 7:00PM at the United Methodist Church. Please make sure you get a physical if you need one. If you are not sure, contact Misty ASAP.
  3. Cheer fees are due NEXT WEEK on June 30th. The MHS office is open on Wednesdays from 10:00AM - 2:00PM. Please plan ahead, and take care of your fees before the deadline.
  4.  We are only 22 DAYS away from our first practice! Everyone is responsible for learning both parts of the Loyalty dance (first half & second half), the cheers from this video, and reviewing the materials from our tryouts. All of these can be found on the materials page. Remember, the more prepared you are on the first day the faster and farther we will progress as a team!
  5. The Airshow of the Cascades is August 26th and 27th. The Buff Boosters need parent/family volunteers to help sell t-shirts. This is a great opportunity for our program to help out a group who has helped us in the past. Most recently, Buff Boosters helped us pay for our new uniforms a few years ago! Check out the link on our Facebook page for more information.
  6. Next week is OSAA Moratorium week, so coaches will not be communicating with athletes and families until August 1st. If you contact me at all please know I cannot communicate back until August 1st.

Thank you for taking the time to read this. We are looking forward to an amazing season!

Loyalty - First Half

Hello ladies!

Thank you for your patience in waiting for this video. I hope you all had a blast at our camp, I know Coach Sumner and I sure did! The week after camp was OSAA Moratorium Week, which meant we were not allowed to contact you at all, hence the delay in getting you the video.

Make sure you also check out the Second Half of Loyalty so you are fully prepared.

Veterans, please watch this video because there are a few minor changes. This will help us all be on the same page, and run our practices more smoothly. Can't wait to see you all at practice next week :)

And a special thanks to Soraya and Victoria for volunteering as tributes!

Camp 2015

Hope everyone has been having a wonderful summer! I'm sure you've been working very hard on your workouts (if not this is your chance to start) and are looking forward to camp. It's only two weeks away!

OSAA Camp Ridgeview High School
Saturday July 25th 9:00am - 4:00pm
Meet at MHS @ 9:00 sharp!

  • We need drivers to help our team get to Ridgeview High School! We would prefer that these drivers be adult family members of our cheerleaders. If your family is able to help please contact Coach Sumner (her contact info is on your handouts) or post a message to the Madras High Cheerleading page on Facebook.
  • Everyone needs to have a pair of black shorts for camp. Not capris, or spandex. Black shorts! Omni Cheer has lots of black shorts on their website for under $6.
  • Coach Sumner will bring shirts for everyone. Please make sure you wear a good sports bra.
  • Cheerleaders will need to bring their own lunch and water. Please make healthy choices for your lunch so you don't feel gross for the second half of camp! Bring a water bottle, there will be at least 50 other cheerleaders there and you don't want to wait in line for the drinking fountain.
This post will be updated as needed. Please pass this along to anyone from our team who needs it. Thanks!

Football Tryouts 2015

Welcome back!

MHS Tryouts
May 27th & 28th (both days are mandatory)
4:00pm

IMPORTANT UPDATE BELOW!!

It's already that time, tryouts are almost here! Coach Sumner and I are so excited to see new and familiar faces in a few weeks. Tryouts will be slightly different this round. For tryouts this year you will have the materials BEFORE the first day. This means that you can perfect the cheers and dance on your own before showing up!

Here is the link to ALL of the videos you'll need for tryouts. There are several versions (front and back) to several of them.

  • IMPORTANT UPDATE - Youtube has deleted the videos of the dance we were learning. We will instead teach you at short alternative dance at tryouts. You only need to learn the two cheers BEFORE tryouts.
  • MHS Chant (this is the video with the man and the woman. They use the words A-H-S, red and white.) Our words will be "M-H-S, blue and white."
  • Come On Buffs, Let's Fight (this is the video with the 2 girls in the blue uniforms.) Our words will be "Blue, red, and white. Come on Buffs, Let's fight."

Those are the three pieces that will be judged for tryouts! Please contact us if you have any questions. Leave a comment on the blog, or check out our Madras High Cheerleading page on Facebook!

We can't wait to see you on May 27th!

Cheerleading Vocabulary

Perhaps this would be better titled "What is NOT in a Cheerleader's Vocabulary." I found this article to be informative and offers a great perspective that is sometimes hard to see. Take the time to read it! You'll only get better because of it.

Cheer Costs

Hi cheerleaders and families!

We've had a great first two practices. Coach Sumner and I are extremely excited about the progress the team has made in a few short days! We have to attribute a fair amount of this success to the team working hard on the material prior to practices.

As you may know, the typical athletic fee for any sport is $65 per season. This year cheerleading will NOT pay this fee. However, this may change in future seasons or years. If you already paid the fee, please contact bookkeeper Misty Adams about possible refunds.

At the fall sports meeting we talked about the fee the cheerleaders would need for their clothing for the season. At that time we told you that the $25 dollar fee would cover a bow, pair of briefs (for under the skirts), and shoes. Later at the meeting we also discussed making the fee $50 so the team could also get matching shirts and shorts. Coach Sumner and I have recently talked about a different situation, and here is our proposition: $35 fee that would pay for a bow, pair of briefs, shoes and a t-shirt.

So the two options are:

$25 for a bow, briefs, and shoes            OR            $35 for a bow, briefs, shoes, and a t-shirt.

The cheer program has paid for all uniforms, warm-ups, bags, poms, signs, etc., because these are things that will stay with the program. The cheer fee is for things that the team members will keep after the season is over. We would REALLY like to get the team the t-shirts (for an extra $10) so that they can look uniformed and professional at events that don't necessarily require uniforms such as volunteer events we will go to, performances needing a more casual outfit, fundraisers, and to wear to school on days we have a game.

PLEASE talk to your family or cheerleader tonight about these options! If we are to order shirts in time for our stadium opening/scrimmage on August 29th (check the calendar) then we will need to decide tomorrow at practice! This is a great backup plan if our missing uniform tops don't come in on time!

Let us know as soon as possible if you have any concerns. Thanks!

Athletic Registration

Hello all! If you haven't done your athletic paperwork, then you can do it online using this link:

Online Registration (click those words and it will take you to the page.)

ALL ATHLETES MUST HAVE THIS PAPERWORK COMPLETED PRIOR TO TOMORROW'S PRACTICE. Students who have not completed the forms will be required to come to practice, but will NOT be able to participate. Get it done please!

See you tomorrow!   :)

Excitement!!

I am beyond excited for practices to start on Tuesday! Sure we've got a lot of work ahead of us, and we've got some time constraints to face. Despite that, I don't think it's possible for me to be more excited to start practicing! Oh how I wish I didn't have to wait almost 2 more days!

Look at all that excitement. That's how my insides look! ;)

That's right, more excited than Buddy the Elf.

I hope you are all as excited as Coach Sumner and I are. What a fantastic season we have to look forward to! See you Tuesday!

Lots of Info

Hello team!

There is lots to go over in this post, so please read it EXTRA carefully. Please check out all the pages/tabs above to make sure you view all the information.

  • We have been asked to put on a half-time show at the first football game. This means we have extra work to do before then. Because of this, Coach Sumner and I are asking that you please learn Swagger Jagger dance on your own BEFORE our first practice. The video is extremely helpful and goes through the moves by each count. You can find the video on the MATERIALS page.
  • There is a Fall Sports Meeting on Tuesday August 12th. Find more details on the CALENDAR page.
  • Free Physicals are on Thursday August 14th. See the CALENDAR page for details.
  • Cheerleaders are only allowed 3 excused absences during our summer practices. Please look at the EXPECTATIONS page to see the full policy. It is very important, go look!
  • Don't forget that you are required to know all of the cheers in Cheer Video #1 (it's on the MATERIALS page.) If you don't know the cheers you will have to do extra conditioning. Learn them, and be ready to perform them at the FIRST practice.
Other than that important info, I hope you are enjoying the remainder of your summer! Get together with some of your teammates and practice all of your material so you feel prepared. I am SO excited for our first practice. As always, get in touch with me if you have any questions or concerns! :)

Airshow

Hello parents and team members!

August is already here, and it feels like this summer has flown by.

As you saw, Buff Boosters helped our team purchase a new mascot for the upcoming seasons. In order to continue this positive relationship between our team and the Boosters we need to help them throughout the year.

Our first opportunity to help the Boosters will come this August at the Madras Airshow! We will need both team members and some parents to help run a booth for the Buff Boosters.  They will need help from 2:00pm to 4:00pm on Friday August 22, and 7:30 am to 4:30 pm on Saturday August 23. We need to cover at least 4 hours in the booth. The more we can cover the better!

Please let me or Mrs. Sumner know if you are available to help AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!  If we let the Boosters know soon then we can have the time slots we desire. Thanks so much! Keep working hard!
